About
Us Mission Statement Our
aim is to enable low-income immigrant women and their families of all
cultural backgrounds in our community to have equal access to education and
training, affording both increased self-sufficiency as well as healthier
lifestyles. The
Canadian Centre for Women's Education and Development (CCWED) was established
in April 1987 following the development of a Sexual Abuse Program at George
Brown College. It was here where low-income immigrant women revealed their
life experiences and stories, accounts that subsequently motivated CCWED to
take an active role and become involved in the lives of these and other
similar women who face extreme hardships, including, among other things,
abuse and welfare harassment The
Canadian Centre for Women's Education and Development is committed to
ensuring that its policies, procedures and programs are made accessible to
all immigrant women and children regardless of age, race, culture and
religion. Testimonial This is Shantha’s story.…………. I am a divorced woman and single
mother of two children. I was never
given the opportunity to pursue a career although I would very much have liked
to do so. For many years I lived in
Ontario Housing and received social assistance. I still get flash backs of my
violent relationship, my marriage, and still experience many sleepless nights
reliving the abuse I thought could never happen. Not to ones surprise, I found
myself overwhelmed with my life existence. I was at a point in my life that I
felt I would never be able to overcome and make positive changes for myself
and my children until the day I made contact with the Canadian Centre for
Women’s Education and Development. I was given assistance in many aspects
specifically directed to the needs of myself and my dependants. There is a
true saying, “Where there is a will,
there is a way”. The way for me was
working hand in hand with the Canadian Centre for Women’s Education and
Development together with their sincere and empathetic staff that went out of
their way to be of assistance. The Counsellor listened
patiently to my situation and advised me of all my options. I needed to clearly pull myself together and
take control of my life. They advised on
how to proceed forward and helped me to set my future goals. Striving towards my goals through planning,
resolving my legal concerns, getting financial advice and receiving emotional
support were all made available to me. When the Centre could not provide what was
necessary they directed me to other agencies that could assist me and gave me
the confidence and assurance that I would be able to manage my future. As the years pass, I have
stayed connected to the Centre and know, without a doubt, that myself and my children will always be welcome at the Centre. The Centre takes care of our needs and
meets the needs of many others like myself.
They assist in many areas such as education, job preparation, housing,
legal matters and many other issues that might arise in ones life and their
support is appreciated. In 2008, I applied for
Habitat for Humanity, housing made available through public & corporate
donations. The Centre worked with me through the entire application process until
the very end when I was faced with discrimination. The Centre handled my case
through the Ontario Human Rights Commission and represented me until I accomplished
my goal and receive proper accommodations. The Canadian Centre for
Women’s Education and Development in Toronto assists any woman wanting to
leave an abusive situation or at risks of abuse. The Centre does this by
providing information, counselling, education and
support services. Anyone looking to seek assistance in these areas can freely
call the Centre and get help. You can offer your support to
the Centre by making any financial donation. A charitable receipt will be issued to the
donor. Your support will help other women
in your community who are facing daily struggles, poverty, violence; and
physical & emotional health problems due to domestic violence and abuse. The Canadian Centre for
Women’s Education and Development is a non-profit organization working for
the betterment of women and children in your community; take advantage of it. Shantha Kanagayiah
